One More Night of Hope, Mr President, Pull the Plug

One more night indeed and it doesn't look good. Depending what you read, it looks like Obama is going to be repeating the mistakes of Lyndon B Johnson in the 60s.

Johnson's fateful decision to continue to escalate the Vietnam war is what costed him the presidency in 1968.

The New York Times as well as other pundits, including those in Canada like Craig Oliver are calling this Obama's Vietnam.

After all, it has been proven by pretty much all, except for some war mongering wingnut chicken hawks on the Right, that this war isn't winnable. The Soviets had proven this much many years ago. They knew when to cut their losses, pack up the show and haul it on home.

The Afghans don't want any more foreigners invading their homes and way of life. They have made this clear. Life has gotten worse for them since we began to invade. Even the women aren't noticing much improvement. Malalai Joya, who once served on Afghan parliament admits this.

"Women's conditions in some cities have slightly improved since the Taliban regime. But if we compare it with the era before the rule of the fundamentalists in Afghanistan, it has not changed much. Afghan women had more rights in the 1960s to 1980s than today. Rapes, abductions, murders, violence, forced marriages, and violence are increasing at an alarming rate never seen before in our history. Women commit self-immolation to escape their miseries, and the rate of self-immolations is climbing in many of the provinces. Afghanistan still faces a women's rights catastrophe.
"The root cause of this ongoing catastrophe in Afghanistan is that the government is controlled by fundamentalists of both brands (jihadis and Taliban) who are constantly nourished by the United States and its allies. …People suffer from such extreme insecurity that many have stopped sending their children to school, especially girls, fearing that they might be kidnapped or raped."
Why are we all there again? As I've pointed out here, this is not a war on terror, this is not about improving the lives of Afghans, particularly the women. PM Gordon Brown has even warned Karzai about corruption in his government. Every government knows this government is corrupt and no, it will never be able to sustain itself. As I've pointed out in the past as well as others, I'm sure, it doesn't matter when we leave: the Taliban will be back at the helm. The folks of Afghanistan seem to prefer life under them than with this war.
In the words of Michael Moore, it would seem that Obama is about to drink Bush's kool-aid and cave into the pressure General McChrystal to send about 40 000 more troops.
“This is not a war of choice,” he told the Veterans of Foreign Wars at their convention in Phoenix. “This is a war of necessity. Those who attacked America on 9/11 are plotting to do so again. If left unchecked, the Taliban insurgency will mean an even larger safe haven from which Al Qaeda would plot to kill more Americans.”
Except for one problem: Binladen and the other thugs who were behind 9/11 have not been caught. We've been at war for eight years, allowing a corrupt Karzai Government to continue, killing innocent civilians and cutting short the futures of many soldiers. Ouf! what a mess! How in the world continuing this senseless war; this Vietnam,  going to accomplish anything it hadn't in the previous eight years?
Gulp! He is indeed about to drink Bush's Kool-aid! How did he get sucked into it? If the GOP was pressuring him to send more troops as well, he doesn't realize that he's playing into their hands? The GOP and their pundits don't really care about the wars overseas, they see what can cost Obama the presidency.
It is time to end the war, Mr President. Make that move to start withdrawing. The Europeans would surely pull out as well, and yes, maybe even our war mongering, monkey-see; monkey-do PM will follow your lead and pull the show out. Let's just get out now. Take a cue from the Soviets before us and cut our losses. Continuing an unpopular and unwinnable war cost LBJ the presidency in spite of the good things he did implement in the U.S. Obama is pretty certain to meet this very same fate.
As Michael Moore says in a letter he wrote to Obama, he can show courage by ending this all right now. Here is the letter from Moore to Obama

Dear President Obama,
Do you really want to be the new "war president"? If you go to West Point tomorrow night (Tuesday, 8pm) and announce that you are increasing, rather than withdrawing, the troops in Afghanistan, you are the new war president. Pure and simple. And with that you will do the worst possible thing you could do -- destroy the hopes and dreams so many millions have placed in you. With just one speech tomorrow night you will turn a multitude of young people who were the backbone of your campaign into disillusioned cynics. You will teach them what they've always heard is true -- that all politicians are alike. I simply can't believe you're about to do what they say you are going to do. Please say it isn't so.
It is not your job to do what the generals tell you to do. We are a civilian-run government. WE tell the Joint Chiefs what to do, not the other way around. That's the way General Washington insisted it must be. That's what President Truman told General MacArthur when MacArthur wanted to invade China. "You're fired!," said Truman, and that was that. And you should have fired Gen. McChrystal when he went to the press to preempt you, telling the press what YOU had to do. Let me be blunt: We love our kids in the armed services, but we f*#&in' hate these generals, from Westmoreland in Vietnam to, yes, even Colin Powell for lying to the UN with his made-up drawings of WMD (he has since sought redemption).
So now you feel backed into a corner. 30 years ago this past Thursday (Thanksgiving) the Soviet generals had a cool idea -- "Let's invade Afghanistan!" Well, that turned out to be the final nail in the USSR coffin.
There's a reason they don't call Afghanistan the "Garden State" (though they probably should, seeing how the corrupt President Karzai, whom we back, has his brother in the heroin trade raising poppies). Afghanistan's nickname is the "Graveyard of Empires." If you don't believe it, give the British a call. I'd have you call Genghis Khan but I lost his number. I do have Gorbachev's number though. It's + 41 22 789 1662. I'm sure he could give you an earful about the historic blunder you're about to commit.
With our economic collapse still in full swing and our precious young men and women being sacrificed on the altar of arrogance and greed, the breakdown of this great civilization we call America will head, full throttle, into oblivion if you become the "war president." Empires never think the end is near, until the end is here. Empires think that more evil will force the heathens to toe the line -- and yet it never works. The heathens usually tear them to shreds.
Choose carefully, President Obama. You of all people know that it doesn't have to be this way. You still have a few hours to listen to your heart, and your own clear thinking. You know that nothing good can come from sending more troops halfway around the world to a place neither you nor they understand, to achieve an objective that neither you nor they understand, in a country that does not want us there. You can feel it in your bones.
I know you know that there are LESS than a hundred al-Qaeda left in Afghanistan! A hundred thousand troops trying to crush a hundred guys living in caves? Are you serious? Have you drunk Bush's Kool-Aid? I refuse to believe it.
Your potential decision to expand the war (while saying that you're doing it so you can "end the war") will do more to set your legacy in stone than any of the great things you've said and done in your first year. One more throwing a bone from you to the Republicans and the coalition of the hopeful and the hopeless may be gone -- and this nation will be back in the hands of the haters quicker than you can shout "tea bag!"
Choose carefully, Mr. President. Your corporate backers are going to abandon you as soon as it is clear you are a one-term president and that the nation will be safely back in the hands of the usual idiots who do their bidding. That could be Wednesday morning.
We the people still love you. We the people still have a sliver of hope. But we the people can't take it anymore. We can't take your caving in, over and over, when we elected you by a big, wide margin of millions to get in there and get the job done. What part of "landslide victory" don't you understand?
Don't be deceived into thinking that sending a few more troops into Afghanistan will make a difference, or earn you the respect of the haters. They will not stop until this country is torn asunder and every last dollar is extracted from the poor and soon-to-be poor. You could send a million troops over there and the crazy Right still wouldn't be happy. You would still be the victim of their incessant venom on hate radio and television because no matter what you do, you can't change the one thing about yourself that sends them over the edge.
The haters were not the ones who elected you, and they can't be won over by abandoning the rest of us.
President Obama, it's time to come home. Ask your neighbors in Chicago and the parents of the young men and women doing the fighting and dying if they want more billions and more troops sent to Afghanistan. Do you think they will say, "No, we don't need health care, we don't need jobs, we don't need homes. You go on ahead, Mr. President, and send our wealth and our sons and daughters overseas, 'cause we don't need them, either."
What would Martin Luther King, Jr. do? What would your grandmother do? Not send more poor people to kill other poor people who pose no threat to them, that's what they'd do. Not spend billions and trillions to wage war while American children are sleeping on the streets and standing in bread lines.
All of us that voted and prayed for you and cried the night of your victory have endured an Orwellian hell of eight years of crimes committed in our name: torture, rendition, suspension of the bill of rights, invading nations who had not attacked us, blowing up neighborhoods that Saddam "might" be in (but never was), slaughtering wedding parties in Afghanistan. We watched as hundreds of thousands of Iraqi civilians were slaughtered and tens of thousands of our brave young men and women were killed, maimed, or endured mental anguish -- the full terror of which we scarcely know.
When we elected you we didn't expect miracles. We didn't even expect much change. But we expected some. We thought you would stop the madness. Stop the killing. Stop the insane idea that men with guns can reorganize a nation that doesn't even function as a nation and never, ever has.
Stop, stop, stop! For the sake of the lives of young Americans and Afghan civilians, stop. For the sake of your presidency, hope, and the future of our nation, stop. For God's sake, stop.
Tonight we still have hope.
Tomorrow, we shall see. The ball is in your court. You DON'T have to do this. You can be a profile in courage. You can be your mother's son.
We're counting on you.
Yours,
Michael Moore

P.S. There's still time to have your voice heard. Call the White House at 202-456-1111 or email the President.
You can get the email link here.
I sincerely hope that President Obama will lead and do the courageous thing. This war needs to end now (as does the one in Iraq, of course). It's about time the President concentrated on helping his own people recover from the recession and the damage that is Georgie jr and Dickie. Let's do what the Afghans want us to do: get the hell out!

The Shock Jock Wannabe of Toronto! RANT ALERT!!

He really is! That's right! I am talking about Ryan Doyle. I swear Rush Limbaugh must be his hero. His show is, unfortunately, is simulcast with CJAD here in Montreal. Ok, why should I be this shocked? After all, a large group of these Astral Radio hosts are right-winged, but I would like to believe that the right-leaning hosts here in Montreal would at least have the decency to not praise things like privatized health care & Dead Peasant Insurance or condemn a factory sit-in of hard working citizens laid off without even their pay checque. Apparently, like most of these American shock jocks, Ryan Doyle has no shame in showing good ol' fashion American type hate.

I remember he did a show actually trashing our health care system & even played that Shona Holmes commercial over the air as if it were the gospel truth: long after it was established that she had lied. I had written him a scathing email; full rant mode & it never got answered. So, I don't email him anymore.

I also remember getting offended when he suggested Canada didn't didn't do enough to foreign nationals when found guilty of terrorism. Well, Canada deports them & /or imprisons them; same as any foreign national found guilty of a crime. I was wondering if he wanted Canada to bring the death penalty back. His rantings were scary. But, I let it go.

But this evening, he REALLY went beyond American wingnut when he trashed not only the new Michael Moore movie, Capitalism, a Love Story AND trashing Michael Moore himself but also trashed the patrons at the theatre for either cheering for a good scene like the workers' sit-in at the factory or for booing ol' Georgie.

Now, if he has wet dreams about capitalism, especially the American way of governing & doing business, that's one thing; I have disdain for it, but ok, many folks do for God knows what reason.

Doyle LOVES Dead Peasant Insurance
his...THIS...AAARRRGGGHH!! excuse of a radio host actually praised Dead Peasant's insurance!! To paraphrase him: 'if Astral Media were to take out a life insurance policy on my life; more power to 'em!' What's more, he was practically manic!! He even had the balls to say that it was basically no more immoral than a regular person taking out life insurance for his/her loved ones. How dare he? Is he that callous or that stupid? He thought Moore's interviewing the families such as the Walmart family was uh well, don't quite remember the adjective; so let's say, contempt. Well, Ryan, as a rule, most Walmart employees earn barely above minimum wage, thus, whatever life insurance was purchased by this family probably didn't yield as much as the cool 80,000$-plus Walmart yielded on that poor woman's life, while this man does the best he can raise his kids alone. They don't deserve help Ryan??

Doyle apparently endorses slave labour
Next, how dare you, so callously ask why the cops never showed up to Republic Door & Window to arrest the 240 workers sitting in?? Did you miss the part where they didn't get their last hard-earned wages?? Do you support slave labour, Mr. Doyle?? Because in condemning those people, you basically endorsed slave labour on the air!! Thanks largely in part to Moore's filming of this event, the workers not only got their wages, but the company was bought out & they're going back to work! What is soooo terrible about that?? Don't you right-winged types believe everyone should work for a living & not draw social-assistance or E.I. ? Or do you think if they're not in view or not heard, they don't exist in your perfect little world?? What the hell happened to responsable media?? I honestly hope Astral Media catches this. I really do, simply because I would be curious to know if your employer  told you they decided that you were no longer going to draw a salary; what would you do? What if they canned you tomorrow without your last pay-checque??

Of course it's normal for most of the patrons to cheer these workers at the sit-in on!! We all like it when the little guy successfully takes on the big guy!

Michael Moore is a corporation that nauseates him
Oh really? Yah, he makes money from his films, but check out how much of it goes to various charities. Not that you would care!  Nauseating? That's ok, because basically, hearing your pompous voice pontificating your Ultra-right winged propoganda makes me want to dive head first into my own vomit!

Oh, you love the States so much? Something you should know. Globe & Mail, yes! A paper you should love, came out with a story today. A study done by the UN ranked Canada  #4; The U.S. ranks #13. Oh, and to paraphrase ol' Stevie, 'Canada is a Northern European Welfare state of the worst kind....'. Well, such a northern European welfare state came topped off at #1: Norway.

A Dare for Doyle
You love Capitalism so much? You're a proud Libertarian? Put your money where your mouth is!

  1. Cut your OHIP card up & pay cash at the Cleveland clinic or some other private clinic around the TO area;
  2. Don't plan on retiring unless you saved up all your money; don't take out old age pension or CPP
  3. If you lose your job & I have read about the mass cuts from Astral Radio stations here in Montreal & in TO in the various newspapers; it is possible that you lose your job; don't collect EI
  4. If you get hurt on the job; don't collect workman's comp
  5. Don't drive on the roads; paid for by the government
  6. Don't eat wheat, meat, dairy or produce; those farms are government sponsored
  7. Don't go to any museums, national parks, etc. Government funded
  8. If you get robbed or some other crime occurred; don't call the police; they work for the government
  9. If your house catches fire; don't call the fire department
  10. Don't send your kids to public school
  11. Don't use tap water or flush the toilet
Well, are you game?

Capitalism; No Love Lost Here

Yes, I just broke one of my rules & took the bus Downtown to pay full price for a movie in the theatre instead of waiting for it come out on DVD; movie theatres are not good for migraine sufferers such as myself, but I couldn't wait to see it. I'm glad I did.

Michael Moore never fails to inform & entertain. His latest effort, Capitalism, A Love Story is no exeption. Once again, he shows he is not afraid to confront the establishment. In this case, the U.S. banking industry, Wall Street & of course, Congress. Informative with his usual peppering of snark.  However, I found this movie more cryptic than his other efforts. Most of all, it either reminded us of certain points in history most seem to have forgotten & new material that perhaps Americans never even knew.

In the 1hr 57 minutes of this movie, he interviews & meets so many people, travels to so many places & leads us through various trips down memory lane; in history & his own youth growing up in the once properous town of Flint, Michigan; now reduced to a ghost town, that one cannot remember all the details. I think a whole series should have been made about this. I hope this would be possible, either by Moore or someone else, it is too important.  I will attempt to share a few highlights.

The Roman Empire:
Moore illustrates in the film how the Roman Empire couldn't expect to make profits without the use of slave labour. It quickly shows how the Roman Empire fell due to capitalist greed.

The U.S. is NOT a Democracy:
The only thing democratic about the U.S. is that all can vote & democracy stops there. According to Moore, the U.S. is a plutocracy & a corporatocracy as it is run by the 1% of the American population which is rich & not by the majority, 99% who are workers.
In the film, a few examples are offered such as how the Reagan presidency was run by corporate puppet master. He cites of course Georgie. Make no mistake though, he does also take a crack at the Democrats for alot of the problems with American Capitalism today.
According to Moore, the only thing democratic in the U.S., much to the chagrin of such corporations like Citigroup, is the right for all to vote.

The U.S. Constitution:
To all you Libertarians & other Neo-cons: Pay attention! This is especially applicable to that toad; that constitution loving John Mackey of Wholefoods. He says health care was never guaranteed in the constitution. Well, here is something else that is also not guaranteed in your precious constitution: nowhere does it say anything about the free market, free enterprise or capitalism. Moore cites only things like "We the people..." & "...for the welfare of all..." He said it sounded like another 'ism'.

Under paid Airline Pilots:
How much do you think airline pilots make in the U.S.? Guarantee, it's not as much as one would like to believe; alot of them: under 20,000$ a year & alot of them do hold down two jobs to survive. Something to think about before getting on a plane & going over 35 000 feet in the air.

Kids for Cash
Some may have heard about P.A. Child Care in Pensylvania (name sounds harmless enough, doesn't it?) scandal involving two Judges. P.A. Child Care was a juvenile detention centre that although funded largely in part by tax payers, it was a private enterprise. The owners of the establishment of course got paid for every child staying there. Former residents were interviewed. While not angels, these kids' sins certainly didn't warrant incarceration & wouldn't have here in Canada. One boy who threw food at another kids & a girl caught smoking pot stayed there & talked about life at P.A. Child Care. One thing notable was the owner of the facility actually determined how long the kids would stay there instead of sentencing by a judge.  Judges Mark Ciavarella Jr & Michael Conohan involved  with the scam were finally caught taking kick-backs for every kid they sentenced to P.A. & another Juvenile Facility.  Here is a good overview of the scandal. They originally agreed to plead guilty in February to lesser charges which would have yielded 87 months in prison. Well, wheeling & dealing won't seem to work here as a federal judge has rejected the deal.
As someone who works in social services; I was appalled to learn about this. Such things are unheard of here.  All facilities here are government run & should continue to be government run. This is a no brainer to even those who don't work for social services or it should be.  It just made me wonder how low some Americans can sink?

Hijacking Jesus:
The phrase used in the film when tackling the religious angle. Moore interviewed two parish priests & a bishop from the Archdiocese of Detroit. When asked about Capitalism, all agreed that Capitalism & religion are incompattible. Capitalism is immoral. While there are many examples of this in the bible, the movie cited the Gospel According to  Luke,
(19)  "And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said, Blessed are ye poor: for yours is the kingdom of God."

(23) But woe unto you that are rich! for ye have received your consolaton

Proof enough that capitalism should never play a part in religion & vice-versa. Amazing how folks are easily fooled, isn't it?
Hey Stevie! You're 'hijacking Jesus'

Special mortgages for 'friends' of Countrywide:
Chris Dodd, a former senator from Connecticut is one such special friend among others who was hammered in the movie. A former employee explains how he was instructed by his superiors to give 'special' treatment to a small select "VIP" clientele.
This, of course, is on the backs of average Americans who could not qualify for a mortgage or loan under normal circumstances who got mortages & loans with crazy contracts with so much fine print that led up to inflated interest payments as high as 200%.

The Workforce:
For the most part: certainly not democratic. Something that is obvious, but we don't think about. It is a dictatorship for the most part which we tend to accept.
A lot of this film is devoted to the American workforce & the lack there of in certain cities.
Moore goes on a walk down memory lane with his dad in his home town of Flint, Michigan, a once thriving town where his father worked on the assembly line at GM. The land is now flattened & looks very much dead; almost third-world like; much like other towns Moore takes us through where industry has suffered.
He also takes us to a sit-in at a bankrupt factory, Republic Doors & Windows in Chicago one month following the election of President Obama. About 240 workers were let go without even a paychecque, let alone pension plans, severance packages, health care. Paraphrasing what one of them said: they understand bad business decisions but they didn't make business decisions, they made windows & doors. Even Obama was sympathetic to the workers' cause. The film did one good thing though, the workers did end up getting paid what was owed to them.
This sit-in was very much reminiscent of a sit-ins in the 1930s which led to Franklin Delano Roosevelt's second bill of rights which stated everyone was entitled to a home, a job with decent wages, good education & yes, universal health care. Unfortunately, that second bill of rights would never be enacted as Roosevelt died a year later.

Dead Peasants:
I now have another reason to boycott Walmart. Here is something most people probably didn't know. Companies such as Walmart, Proctor & Gamble & of course, Wall Street & the Banking industry does, often unbeknownst to its' workers is that they take out life insurance policies on the workers with of course, the owners of the company would be the beneficiaries. These dead workers are referred to as 'Dead Peasants'. What an awful term for this! What a terrible idea! How do they sleep at night?

Attempt at a Citizen's Arrest at AIG & other companies:
Met with yellow tape, police escort & the suits blocking the cameras. It is humorous to see Moore with his money bags. Predictably, never to be filled & never getting past the front door, even banned from these buildings. Now, he couldn't be onto something, could he?

Rep Marcy Kaptur; a rare hero in Congress according to the film:
She is viewed encouraging Americans who lost their homes to squat in them.
She also explains how a 'financial coup d'etat' took place in Congress when the failed 700 billion$ bail-out plan was mysteriously  revived so close before an election.

In the words of one man who lost his home on land belonging to his wife's family for many years in Peoria, Illinois: Paraphrased again: 'there has to be a rebellion between the people who don't have anything & those who do'. We can only hope this would happen. Probably the only way for the American people to take back their country from the 1% . Too bad it isn't going in that direction though.

The film illustrates how the American people are too easily fooled into believing they can have a slice of the American dream which will never materialize under the American system. When will they stop being fooled?

Noticeably, Moore never once uses the 's' word. Instead, he calls it 'Democracy'. He also appeared to be careful to not praise or villify President Obama.

To conclude, Moore says:  "Capitalism is an evil, and you cannot regulate evil. You have to eliminate it and replace it with something that is good for all people, and that something is democracy." However, I can't help but detect some despondance on his part, especially when mentioning how Franklin Delano Roosevelt's Second Bill of Rights will never get passed. He has those musings while we see the devastation of Katrina in Louisiana. Folks literally trapped on roof tops with Moore saying that we would never find the wealthy corporates stuck on roof tops, crying out for help.

Everybody should see this film; not just Americans but also Canadians as we could have these same economic & societal disasters down the road. Will the Tea-baggers, Birthers & other neo-cons wise up & channel their revolt to where it's so richly deserved?

Remembering 9/11 with Health Care Reform

I know, I'm a day late. I didn't forget 9/11. I read about the happenings all over the U.S. & the world for that matter to commemorate that horrific day & as well it should be, but what about honoring the surviving rescue workers & volunteers who did survive 9/11? The only one who honored them was "America's most feared film maker", Michael Moore with the help of three of those uncovered rescue workers: Reggie Cervantes, William Maher & John Graham in the movie Sicko.

Many of them chronically ill with lung damage & other conditions related to being exposed to the toxicity of the smoke & debris at Ground Zero. They seem to be the forgotten ones. Most can't work anymore due to their mental & physical problems. What did the Bush administration do to 'honor' them?? "...cutting health care funding for Sept. 11 first responders by 77 percent and in December when he canceled a health monitoring and treatment program for Ground Zero workers."  Georgie & his administration seemed to have no problem spending trillions on both wars in Afghanistan & Iraq, but decided to cut the budget to care for these workers here at home? How obscene is that?

About 90% of Ground Zero rescue workers don't have access &/or health care coverage according to Healthcare-now.org. Talk about hypocrisy: the tea-baggers, Birthers & other neo-cons including that bungling red neck, Joe Wilson from Sath-Carolanee whining about coverage for illegal aliens, they have forgotten about these heroes who can no longer work due to their health issues & thus have no health coverage.

Obama made a great point when he said the best way to remember 9/11 is through volunteerism & Cervantes, Maher & Graham are doing just that by "fighting for social justice and access to humane medical treatment for all Americans."

Let 9/11 be a reminder as to why health care reform in the United States is so necessary.
ALL Americans (as well as all humanity deserve to be covered). Anything less than that would be just :

SICKO!!!!
